Take Action Not Sides Award

Ingrid Otero-Smart, Casanova//McCann

Ingrid Otero-Smart is a leader who uses her expertise and influence to create real change. As President and CEO of Casanova//McCann, she has spent over 30 years building impactful campaigns for major brands like Nestle, Donate Life California, Cigna, and many others. But beyond her professional achievements, Ingrid is deeply committed to using her skills for the greater good, especially in the fight to end gun violence.

When she saw that Brady’s End Family Fire (EFF) program wasn’t reaching the Hispanic community, one of the fastest-growing populations of gun owners in America, she took action swiftly. She volunteered her team’s time and resources to ensure the messaging resonated with Spanish-speaking audiences. From testing concepts to developing a full bilingual campaign, Ingrid’s leadership helped bring EFF to a new community, saving lives and driving critical conversations about gun safety.

Her dedication doesn’t stop there. Ingrid is a vocal advocate for responsible gun ownership and community safety, always working to amplify the voices of those most affected by gun violence. Whether through her work with Brady or other initiatives, she leads with compassion, conviction, and an unwavering commitment to doing what’s right.

Legal Action Award

Alan R. Bennett

Alan R. Bennett has dedicated his career to protecting public health and safety through his legal work and advocacy for gun violence prevention. As a leading expert on FDA regulations, he spent decades shaping policies on pharmaceutical advertising, drug safety, and public health law. His work ensured that life-saving medications were properly regulated and that public health remained a priority. But beyond his legal expertise, he has been deeply involved in the fight for gun safety for over 40 years.

In the late 1970s, while working as a Senate staffer on Capitol Hill, Alan first connected with a national gun violence prevention organization while working on legislation to add tracking substances to explosive powders, an effort opposed by the gun lobby but supported by advocates for stronger safety measures. After leaving the Senate and entering private law practice, he joined the organization’s board and helped establish its legal center, which has spent the last four decades holding reckless gun companies and dealers accountable in court. He also played a key role in advancing stronger gun laws, including a landmark bill that strengthened background checks.

For many years, he has worked to strengthen gun laws, challenge dangerous gun industry practices, and educate the public on responsible gun ownership. Today, he continues this work as a board member of the organization’s political advocacy arm, helping elect leaders who will stand up for gun safety. Alan has spent his life doing what’s right, whether shaping FDA policies, holding the gun industry accountable, or working to prevent gun violence. His leadership and dedication have helped save lives and make communities safer.
