The Misher Family Story

Ross Misher with his father, Kenny, and his sister, Jodi

The Cookie and Kenny Misher Award honors the Misher family, whose story reflects the courage to turn unimaginable loss from gun violence into a lifelong fight for change. When Ross was only twelve years old, his father, Kenny Misher, was shot and killed by a former employee who had purchased a gun in just 15 minutes. That moment forever changed Ross’s and his mother Cookie’s lives and inspired them to join the movement to prevent gun violence.

As an undergraduate student at George Washington University, Ross founded the first-ever Brady student group, and Sarah Brady was their first speaker. In the decades since, Ross has dedicated himself to advocacy and education, carrying forward his parents’ legacy. His leadership and storytelling have inspired countless others to join the movement for safer communities, reminding us that behind every gun violence statistic is a family forever changed.

The Misher Award honors Ross’s resilience, his parents’ memory, and the transformative power of young people driven by purpose.

What is the Cookie and Kenny Misher Youth Advocacy Award?

The Misher Award celebrates exceptional young leaders in the gun violence prevention movement who have demonstrated outstanding advocacy, leadership, and community-building through Team ENOUGH, Brady's youth-led initiative.

Each year, two student advocates will receive a $3,000 award to support their ongoing education, organizing, and leadership development. Funded by gun violence survivor and long-time Brady supporter Ross Misher, this award uplifts the diversity, dedication, and impact of Team ENOUGH youth leaders.

Just days ago, a 16-year-old shooter killed three young children and a dedicated teacher with his mother's shotgun. No parent should ever have to wonder if their child will come home from school.
