Brady Statement on the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2023

Washington, D.C., February 1, 2023 – Today, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2023 was reintroduced in both chambers of Congress. This bipartisan legislation, reintroduced by Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) in the Senate and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) in the House of Representatives, seeks to expand the Brady Background Check System to apply to every gun sale and close dangerous loopholes.

Brady President Kris Brown released the following statement:

"This bipartisan bill represents a crucial legislative priority in our fight against gun violence, and it is long overdue for a vote. With more than 90% of Americans supporting expanding background checks, it is time for our elected officials to do their part to work toward a safe future.

"The Brady Background Checks system, established over 25 years ago, has prevented over four million prohibited gun purchases and has saved countless lives, but there is still much work to be done. Today, approximately 1 in every 5 gun sales is completed without a background check. The passage of this legislation would expand background checks to virtually all firearm purchases, ensuring that guns are kept out of the dangerous hands of prohibited buyers. This bill has broad, bipartisan support and has been proven to be a common-sense solution to reducing gun violence in our country.

"We urge the full Congress to pass this life-saving legislation as quickly as possible and send it to President Biden’s desk for signature. The time is now to take action on gun violence and make our communities safer, and we will continue to fight for common sense solutions to end this epidemic."
