A Jury Found the NRA and Former CEO, Wayne LaPierre, Liable in a Case Claiming They Improperly Managed Finances.
Washington, D.C., February 23, 2024 – After a seven-week-long trial and five days of jury deliberations. Wayne LaPierre and the NRA have been found liable for mismanagement of finances. Wayne LaPierre stepped down as CEO amid the trial where his luxurious spending was put on display. Having fought to hold NRA accountable for decades, the national gun violence prevention organization, Brady, released the following statement:
Kris Brown, president of Brady, said:
“Wayne LaPierre is facing down a price tag that Ackerman McQueen won’t be able to foot the bill for. For once, the man who lied to America for decades, who worked to deceive our nation into believing that guns would make us safer, is going to have to pay up for his nefarious practices and irresponsible business dealings. The $4.4 million price tag is only a drop in the bucket for what he owes the American people for the carnage he fueled, but it is a good start on the road to accountability.
I only wish our founders, Jim and Sarah Brady, who LaPierre and the NRA senselessly harassed for trying to free us from gun violence, could be here to see this day.
This fight is not over, while the NRA crumbles, the NSSF is poised to fill the power vacuum and take up the extremist mantle. Let’s not forget that to end this epidemic, we need to overhaul the entire industry. Accountability will be the key to our freedom.”
For years, Brady has worked to expose the NRA’s irresponsible business practices. Among these efforts include:
Sent over 150,000 petitions to the Internal Revenue Administration (IRA) demanding an investigation to remove the NRA’s tax-exempt status on behalf of our supporters.
Since the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012, Brady grassroots activists have held monthly protests at the NRA headquarters.
Filed numerous Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and lawsuits to uncover the gun industry’s role – including the NRA – in the formation and implementation of gun policy under the Trump Administration.
Brady’s Legal Team brought forward a lawsuit that struck down an NRA-backed Florida law that restricted doctors from talking to their patients about the risks of guns on behalf of doctors who believed the law violated their First Amendment rights.

Brady: United Against Gun Violence is the nation's oldest gun organization working to free America from gun violence. We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
