Longtime NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre Announced He Is Stepping Down On The Eve Of A Civil Trial That Is Largely Pursued Thanks To Pressure From Brady And Gun Violence Prevention Advocates.
Washington, D.C., January 5, 2024 – National Rifle Association (NRA) CEO Wayne LaPierre – who has led the gun industry’s nefarious marketing and lobbying efforts since 1991 – is stepping down. Brady, the leading national gun violence prevention organization, released the following statement:
Kris Brown, President of Brady, said:
“Thoughts and prayers to Wayne LaPierre. He’s going to need them to be able to sleep at night. Wayne LaPierre spent three decades peddling the Big Lie that more guns make us safer—all at the expense of countless lives. He has blood on his hands, and I won’t miss him.
“The NRA is on the ropes now more than ever. They are losing their leader, they’re under investigation and headed to trial. Brady and Team ENOUGH youth advocates, survivors, and leaders are to be thanked for building the pressure that created the cracks in the NRA’s foundation.
“Brady is grateful to New York Attorney General Letitia James for her tireless efforts to hold the NRA and Wayne LaPierre accountable. So, Wayne, I guess the real way to stop a bad guy with a gun is through an attorney general with good receipts."
For years, Brady has worked to expose the NRA’s irresponsible business practices. Among these efforts include:
Sent over 150,000 petitions to the Internal Revenue Administration (IRA) demanding an investigation to remove the NRA’s tax-exempt status on behalf of our supporters.
Since the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012, Brady grassroots activists have held monthly protests at the NRA headquarters.
Filed numerous Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and lawsuits to uncover the gun industry’s role – including the NRA – in the formation and implementation of gun policy under the Trump Administration.
Brady’s Legal Team brought forward a lawsuit that struck down an NRA-backed Florida law that restricted doctors from talking to their patients about the risks of guns on behalf of doctors who believed the law violated their First Amendment rights.

Brady: United Against Gun Violence is the nation's oldest gun organization working to free America from gun violence. We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
