Brady Applauds Gov. Newsom For Signing Two Priority Gun Violence Prevention Bills Into Law

The two bills, SB 948 and AB 1743, will mandate firearm safety  education and training and reduce gun trafficking

SACRAMENTO, CA, September 30, 2026 — Brady, the nation’s oldest gun violence prevention group, celebrates Gov. Newsom’s signing of numerous gun violence prevention bills into law, including two sponsored by Brady.

These two bills are SB948, which will ensure that individuals who want to purchase firearms are provided with meaningful education and training on state gun laws and the fundamentals of firearm safety, including secure gun storage and safe firearm handling, and AB1743, also known as the Trace Data Sharing bill, which will help public officials and researchers identify irresponsible gun dealers who fuel illegal gun trafficking by providing data that links a firearm recovered by law enforcement to the location of its first retail sale.

These two milestone bills mark important advances in  California’s gun violence prevention efforts. One brings California in alignment with a growing number of states that require training and education to obtain a firearms safety certificate, while the other demonstrates the state’s leadership in gun violence prevention by creating unparalleled transparency to expose reckless gun dealers and hold them accountable when their practices contribute to harm.

Brady California Legislation and Policy Chair Ruth Borenstein said:

California continues to take inspiring, proactive, and intentional action to prevent gun violence before it happens. Our state ranks amongst the top ten states with the lowest gun death rate, and gun deaths have continued to decline in California year after year. Legislation like SB 948 and AB 1743 will build upon that legacy, further ensuring gun owners in our state are trained and responsible, that communities are informed, and that we have the information needed to build effective solutions to end the gun violence epidemic.

I am so thankful for the Brady California grassroots activists who worked tirelessly to support these bills, Sen. Arreguin and Assemblymember Wicks for initially championing them, and Gov. Newsom for signing them into law.

Brady: United Against Gun Violence is the nation's oldest gun organization working to free America from gun violence. We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
