Washington, D.C., April 8, 2022 - Following Maryland Governor Larry Hogan’s announcement that he will not veto SB 387, a bill banning ghost guns in Maryland, Brady applauds the state legislature for passing this important bill with bipartisan support that will undoubtedly save lives. Ghost guns are an existential threat to public safety and to law enforcement, which was tragically made clear in Maryland after numerous high-profile shootings involving these homemade guns in 2021 and 2022, including at Magruder High School in Montgomery County.
Brady President Kris Brown shared:
“It is abundantly clear that states across the country must take action to stop the proliferation of ghost guns. Maryland’s state legislature has acted swiftly and effectively to ban the sale of these unfinished receivers and parts, which can be purchased without a background check and easily assembled by any person. Sadly, Maryland has seen multiple instances of ghost guns being used in crimes across the state, especially and horrifically by minors in several tragic shootings such as the January shooting at Magruder High School. It is right that the legislature has passed this bill and that Gov. Hogan has allowed it to become law. Brady is grateful to the sponsors of these bills and the frontline and grassroots activists who have worked to draw attention to this issue and for ensuring that this common-sense bill becomes law."

We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
