Washington, D.C., February 3, 2022 - Today, Brady applauds the Biden-Harris Administration and U.S. Department of Justice for building on its Comprehensive Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Gun Crime with the announcement of new actions to address firearms trafficking, to support local law enforcement and investments into community-based solutions. Key among these new actions is a directive to prioritize accountability for gun dealers who criminally sell or transfer firearms, a needed action to address the supply of crime guns and evidence of the importance of Brady’s Gun Store Transparency Project and associated work on improving gun dealer inspections. Brady applauds these new actions and urges the Administration to continue emphasizing preventing gun violence in all of its forms by addressing both the supply of crime guns and illegal firearms trafficking as well as investing in community violence interventions to help heal communities and prevent violence.Brady President Kris Brown shared:“These latest actions from the Biden-Harris Administration demonstrate the President’s continued attention to addressing violent crime and, gun violence specifically, with a comprehensive approach. These actions address the supply of crime guns, which all too frequently are diverted from the legal to the criminal market and trafficked into communities nationwide. President Biden’s actions strengthen enforcement to help stem the flow of these dangerous weapons used to injure and kill far too many people every single day in this country. In his actions, President Biden also underscored the importance of community-based law enforcement, working to create safer neighborhoods and combat gun crime. Finally, President Biden is right to prioritize the need for enhanced federal prosecutions of gun dealers who illegally sell or transfer firearms that are used in violent crimes. This is a critical tool in reducing gun trafficking and we welcome the opportunity to shine a light on why ending the trafficking and supply of firearms comprehensively as outlined today is critical to an effective gun violence prevention strategy.”About President Biden’s Historic Actions in 2021:In his first year in office, President Biden has taken immediate and decisive steps using his executive authority to address gun violence in all of its forms. This includes a suite of executive actions announced in April that include a much needed proposed rule to regulate dangerous, untraceable ghost guns, a comprehensive violence reduction strategy that takes a supply side approach to addressing gun violence, and an emphasis on Veterans and suicide prevention that includes safe storage guidance.These multiple actions demonstrate that the Biden-Harris Administration views gun violence as the complex public health crisis that it is and will work to prevent gun violence in all of its forms. The sum result of these actions is the groundwork for numerous programs, packages and policies that will save lives and address gun violence as the pressing public health crisis that it is.About Brady’s Gun Store Transparency Project:Brady has been defending the victims of gun violence in court and pushing for comprehensive and effective federal, state, and local oversight of the gun industry for decades. Beginning in 2017, Brady filed Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to obtain federal inspection reports whereATF took administrative action against gun stores cited for violating the law. Ultimately when the records were not produced by ATF, Brady took action in court to force production and has received over 55,000 pages to date of these reports. This database includes and builds upon the documents used in investigations conducted by USA Today and The Trace in 2021, The New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and others. This database is the most comprehensive and detailed collection of ATF inspection reports ever released publicly, and will continue to grow as Brady obtains new reports from ATF.
