Josh Scharff
GENERAL COUNSEL AND SENIOR DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS
Having previously represented victims of gun violence in lawsuits against the gun industry, Josh brings a specialized perspective to Brady’s Programs team. Josh leads Brady’s Combating Crime Guns program, which focuses on gun industry oversight and reform to curtail the flow of guns into impacted communities.
As part of this work, Josh also leads Brady's government transparency projects and advocates for gun violence prevention legislation and initiatives. He played an integral role in launching Brady’s Gun Store Transparency Project — the largest database of gun dealer inspection reports from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to ever released to the public — and has helped draw national attention to the need for ATF modernization and gun industry accountability.
Josh graduated from Rutgers University in 2005 and received a joint J.D./M.A. from The George Washington University Law School and The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in 2010. Before joining Brady in 2017, he practiced law at a private firm in Washington, D.C., specializing in arbitration, civil litigation, and negotiations.
