These bills will help hold the gun industry accountable, ban untraceable ghost guns and the future sale of assault weapons, improve secure firearm storage, restrict the presence of guns on college campuses, and more
RICHMOND, VA, April 14, 2026 — This week, Gov. Abigail Spanberger signed a slate of gun violence prevention bills into law.
Virginia loses over 1,200 people a year to gun violence. Among the lifesaving measures signed into law are the following bills Team ENOUGH and Brady grassroots activists advocated for the Virginia General Assembly to pass:
- SB 27 / HB 21 - creates standards of responsible conduct for members of the gun industry, including safety measures regarding the manufacture, purchase, and distribution of firearms;
- SB 109 / HB 201 - requires schools to notify parents about secure firearm storage and risks associated with storing firearms in the home;
- SB 323 / HB 40 - bans the sale, manufacture, and possession of deadly, unserialized ghost guns;
- SB 272 / HB 626 - bans firearms on college campuses throughout the Commonwealth;
- SB 160 / HB 19 - broadens protections for victims of domestic abuse; and
- SB 38 / HB 93 - ensures domestic abusers properly relinquish their firearms.
Gov. Spanberger sent a number of gun violence prevention bills back to the legislature with recommended amendments.
Brady President Kris Brown said:
For four years, past leadership in Virginia’s commonwealth vetoed commonsense gun violence prevention laws. That ends now. By signing these bills into law, Gov. Spanberger ushers in a new future for Virginians – one where communities can feel safe and where we can prevent gun violence before it happens. As a Virginian, I have seen how gun violence has devastated our state, including with the horrific shooting at Virginia Tech University, and so I celebrate Gov. Spanberger’s joining with Virginia’s General Assembly and the public in saying enough is enough. We urge legislators to work with the Governor to pass the strongest version of remaining gun violence prevention bills into law. I look forward to working closely with these champions in the coming days and months to continue to strengthen the gun violence prevention laws in our state – because there is more to be done. I am filled with hope for the future of Virginia, and believe that we can become a leader in gun violence prevention. Virginians deserve no less.

We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
