The proposed rule would undo nearly a century of regulation that prohibited the general public from mailing firearms through the postal service
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 4 , 2026 — Brady, the nation’s oldest gun violence prevention group, has submitted a comment to the United States Postal Service (USPS) urging the USPS to reconsider the proposed rule, “Revised Mailing Standards for Firearms,” which would allow the general public to ship handguns through everyday mail. The proposed changes by the USPS comes after the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) unilaterally announced that, according to them, the existing regulations are unconstitutional.
In their comment, Brady argues that the new, proposed rule would unreasonably expect U.S. postal workers to understand and navigate complex federal, state, and local firearms laws. Brady also argues that it would lead to an increase of trafficking, theft, and the shipment of firearms to individuals who are legally prohibited from possessing them, needlessly endangering communities, and that the proposed rule is in no way compelled by the Second Amendment. Brady has submitted their own comment urging USPS to reject this new rule, and called on activists to submit their own comments.

Brady President Kris Brown said:
The Trump administration is effectively handing gun traffickers across the country a new deadly market to flood our communities with illegal firearms with its new proposal. It is categorically unfair and outright dangerous to expect postal workers to navigate complex federal, state, and local firearm laws, and under this new system, we will undoubtedly see an increase in firearm trafficking and theft – putting all of us at risk. While Trump’s DOJ claims this proposal is about protecting constitutional rights, being able to mail deadly firearms across state borders has nothing to do with the Second Amendment. There are already legal ways of transferring firearms throughout the country. Allowing handguns to be mailed does not expand rights; it only expands life-threatening risk.

Brady: United Against Gun Violence is the nation's oldest gun organization working to free America from gun violence. We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
