The President’s proposed budget calls for unprecedented cuts to federal programming, including life-saving efforts to prevent gun violence, threatening the safety and well-being of millions of Americans across the country
WASHINGTON D.C., May 2, 2025 – Brady, the nation's leading gun violence prevention organization, today released the following statement following Trump’s preliminary skinny budget proposal, which calls for $163 billion in cuts, threatening critical public safety research and programming.
Kris Brown, President of Brady, said:
President Trump’s approach to governing is 'slash now, ask questions later,' and it’s coming at the expense of American’s safety from gun violence. Federal programs provide essential lifelines that protect Americans from our nation’s gun violence crisis, which ashamedly remains the number one killer of kids.
Yet, even as the Trump administration purports to be ‘tough on crime,’ these cuts would strip resources from ATF's ability to prevent illegal gun trafficking and curtail violent crime. They abandon domestic violence survivors by gutting funding for the Violence Against Women Act. They strip away resources from impacted communities, including those experiencing hate crimes. They leave veterans at risk of gun suicide without the support systems they need and deserve.
These aren’t just line items on a spreadsheet; they are proven to save American lives every single day. We’re talking about pulling the rug out from under those who need it the most, even gutting research that would protect future generations. We need real solutions to gun violence, not draconian budget cuts that make our communities less safe.
Brady urges Congress to reject these dangerous cuts and fulfill their mandate to drive forward programs and policies that will create a safer America free of gun violence.
###
Brady: United Against Gun Violence is the nation's oldest gun organization working to free America from gun violence. We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
