Brady Condemns Trump Administration’s "Cataclysmic and Inhumane" Cut in Federal Funding

President Trump’s sweeping decision to indefinitely suspend federal grant funding jeopardizes $13 billion in bipartisan funding for police, safe storage, suicide prevention, school safety, and more

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 28, 2025 – Brady, the nation's leading gun violence prevention organization, today condemned the Trump Administration’s immediate cut to federal grants and loans. The decision — which indefinitely cuts billions in federal assistance to state and local governments, law enforcement agencies, schools, and community organizations working to reduce gun violence — is likely to suspend suicide prevention hotlines, end support for victims of gun violence, gut school safety and counseling programs, halts community violence intervention initiatives, and hamstring law enforcement’s ability to crack down on gun crime.

The unprecedented level of funding communities are currently receiving to tackle gun violence was due to bipartisan cooperation in Congress. Twenty-nine Republicans across the Senate and House joined Democrats to pass the 2022 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA), which authorized approximately 13 billion dollars to combat this epidemic and helped result in a 50-year low in violent crime and the steepest decline in homicides in U.S. history. Now, in a unilateral move by President Trump, this progress hangs in the balance. Brady expresses grave concern that these cuts, which the administration characterizes as targeting “nongovernmental organizations that undermine the national interest" will hurt veterans, domestic violence victims, mass violence survivors, and millions of other Americans in need of care.

This action follows a series of executive actions that have already disrupted gun violence research at the National Institutes of Health and suspended vital public health communications at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Within two days of taking office, President Trump also shuttered the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, responsible for managing a first-ever coordinated federal response to mass shootings and developing an effective whole-of-government approach to protect Americans from gun violence.

President of Brady, Kris Brown, said:

This decision is not just reckless — it is cataclysmic and inhumane. It shows willful disregard for the lives saved by bipartisan gun safety efforts and threatens to reverse the immense progress we have made in combating gun violence over the last two years. All Americans will be at risk – and many may die – as a result. Veterans struggling with their mental health will lose easy access to suicide prevention resources. Students will lose critical school safety programs. Police will lose community policing capacity and funding to crack down on gun crime.

Gun violence doesn’t discriminate based on political affiliation. These dollars are used to save lives in red states and blue states, suburbs and cities, schools and places of worship. Moreover, all of the programs the administration is targeting, from housing to mental health, address the underlying causes of gun violence, which pose a risk to all Americans.

Brady urges President Trump to immediately reverse course and restore Congressionally-approved funding to the states, localities, and communities who need it. This is about public safety – not politics.

###

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
