Brady Adamantly Denounces Supreme Court Decision in United States v. Skrmetti That Will Harm Transgender Americans

Already disproportionately impacted by gun violence, this decision puts transgender Americans in greater danger by denying gender-affirming medical care to minors.

Washington, D.C., June 18, 2025 — Today, in a 6-3 decision in United States v. Skrmetti, the Supreme Court allowed a Tennessee law to stand that makes it unlawful for doctors to prescribe gender-affirming medical care to youth, even when patients themselves, their parents, and their healthcare providers agree that such care is medically necessary –– and despite the fact that access to such care is shown to decrease suicide risk among transgender youth.

Brady and its youth arm Team ENOUGH filed an amicus brief in the case, warning the Supreme Court that the legislation will heighten the risk of gun violence for young people in Tennessee.

The Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Skrmetti is an egregious violation of LGBTQ+ rights and endangers the trans community nationwide. Trans youth are already at a heightened risk of gun violence — particularly firearm suicide — because of discrimination, bullying, and systemic oppression. We should be creating conditions that foster dignity, freedom, and mental well-being for young people to reduce the risk of gun violence, not criminalizing gender-affirming medical care. This decision is a stark example of why gun violence remains the number one killer of youth in America.
