Brady Responds to School Shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, WI; Calls for Immediate Action to Address the Crisis of Gun Violence

Two people have been killed and six others have been injured in the mass shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Wisconsin.

WASHINGTON, D.C., December 16, 2024 — Brady, the nation’s oldest gun violence prevention organization, responded today to a tragic school shooting at the Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin. Preliminary reports from law enforcement indicate that an armed student shot and killed two people and injured six others. This is at least the 83rd school shooting in 2024, and comes just two days after the 12th anniversary of the Sandy Hook school shooting.

New polling from Brady found that Americans are united behind gun safety provisions regardless of political affiliation. In fact, a majority of Trump voters support policies requiring gun owners to report lost or stolen firearms (83%), strengthening background checks (73%), and temporarily limiting firearms to individuals in crisis (69%), among other safety policies. Polling also found that almost 80% of parents fear their child’s school will be the site of a mass shooting.

Kris Brown, president of Brady, said:

Just two days ago, I stood with loved ones of the 26 victims shot and killed 12 years ago at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Today, families in Madison are facing the same horrific nightmare: a child sent to school who will never come home – another future stolen by gun violence.

We don’t have to live like this. The vast majority of Americans – no matter their political party – support common-sense gun safety policies proven to save lives and keep our kids safe. But while we’ve made life saving progress under the Biden administration, Americans must remain vigilant in protecting this progress under four more years of President-elect Trump.

Gun violence is the number one killer of kids in this country, and we know how to solve it. We owe it to our children to stop the next tragedy before it starts.

While details are still emerging, we know that 76% of school shooters under 18 obtain their firearms from the home or the home of a close relative. Brady calls on all gun owners to help end family fire by making sure firearms are stored securely to prevent unauthorized access by minors and others.
