Brady Celebrates Gun Violence Prevention Champion Former Rep. Carolyn McCarthy as The Latest Recipient of The Presidential Citizens Medal
WASHINGTON, D.C., December 12, 2024 — Today, Brady celebrates former Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (NY-4) as the latest recipient of the Presidential Citizens Medal – a recognition that honors her tireless work to prevent gun violence. She is a true hero in our movement, especially as one of the first survivors of gun violence who exemplified one of our favorite Sarah Brady quotes: 'If you can't change the laws, change the lawmakers.'
As a survivor who became a champion in Congress, McCarthy helped build the foundation of today's gun violence prevention movement. For 18 years, she led efforts to strengthen Brady Background Checks and make our communities safer. Her legacy reminds us that change is possible when we combine courage with commitment to action. Brady is proud to have worked alongside McCarthy in the fight to free America from gun violence, and we congratulate her on this well-deserved honor.

Brady: United Against Gun Violence is the nation's oldest gun organization working to free America from gun violence. We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
