Brady Background Checks Have Prevented Over 5 million Prohibited Gun Transactions Since First Enacted
Washington, D.C., June 10, 2025 — Brady, the nation’s oldest gun violence prevention organization, applauded the reintroduction of the Bipartisan Background Checks Act. Chairman of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Rep. Mike Thompson and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick introduced the bill, which aims to strengthen and expand the Brady Background Check system to ensure all firearm purchases and transfers, with limited exceptions, require a background check.
Brady President, Kris Brown, said:
“Brady Background Checks are one of our frontline defenses in the fight to end gun violence. As the legacy of our namesake and President Reagan's press secretary, Jim Brady, and his wife Sarah, background checks have boasted bipartisan support from their inception. Today, the introduction of the Bipartisan Background Checks Bill marks a renewed commitment to honoring the wishes of the majority of Americans who support background checks on all gun sales.
Closing deadly loopholes that exist due to changes in how guns are sold since the 1993 law was enacted isn’t political — it's common-sense and a necessity to save lives. We cannot play political games when the lives of Americans hang in the balance. We thank Representatives Mike Thompson and Brian Fitzpatrick for introducing this legislation and call on Congress to pass this bill and save the lives of countless Americans.”

Brady: United Against Gun Violence is the nation's oldest gun organization working to free America from gun violence. We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
