Less than half of Trump voters believe the President’s gun plans would work to keep their communities safe
WASHINGTON, D.C., December 12, 2024 — A new Morning Consult poll commissioned by Brady, the nation's oldest gun violence prevention organization, reveals that Trump voters do not believe that the majority of Trump’s gun plans – including pledges to weaken Brady Background Checks and limit state gun laws – would keep their communities safe. In fact, Trump voters overwhelmingly support common sense gun safety provisions, including policies requiring gun owners to report lost or stolen firearms (83%), strengthening background checks (73%), and temporarily limiting firearms to individuals in crisis (69%).
Brady’s findings are especially relevant in the wake of yesterday’s tragic school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School, and as UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed earlier this month with an untraceable ghost gun. The poll found that a majority (68%) of Trump voters were either unaware or unsure of Trump's plans to remove restrictions on these untraceable weapons. Recent polling from Brady also found that almost 80% of parents fear their child’s school will be the site of a mass shooting.
"This poll shows why Trump has kept his gun agenda in the shadows: the American people overwhelmingly reject efforts that would weaken the progress we have made in the last four years," said Kris Brown, President of Brady. "As our nation mourns yet another preventable act of gun violence, we urge President-elect Trump to listen to the will of the voters – including the majority of his base – who back stronger gun safety laws. Enough is enough.”
The November 2024 survey reveals broad support for gun safety regulations:
- 73% of Trump voters support strengthening background checks
- 74% of voters, including 69% of Trump voters, support temporarily limiting access to firearms for individuals in crisis
- 84% of voters, including 83% of Trump voters, support programs to prevent veteran suicide and help service members in crisis
- 83% of both Trump voters and gun owners support requiring lost or stolen firearms to be reported to law enforcement
- 80% of voters, including 77% of Trump voters, support safe storage requirements for firearms in homes with children
- 69% of voters, including 58% of Trump voters, support holding the gun industry to similar regulatory standards as the tobacco, automobile, and opioid industries
The poll reveals a significant gap between Trump's gun policy agenda and voter preferences. Gun policy ranks among the bottom three positions that Trump voters want to see implemented in his presidency, alongside climate change and reproductive rights policies.
