Brady Responds to Fatal ICE Shootings in Texas, Maine

Within one week, ICE agents shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Texas and Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Maine

Washington, D.C., July 15, 2026 — Today, Brady President Kris Brown said the following in response to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency’s fatal shootings of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, in Houston, Texas, and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, 26, in Biddeford, Maine:

In less than one week, two men were fatally shot by federal immigration agents. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Johan Sebastian Guerrero both leave behind devastated families, including a three-year-old child who witnessed her father’s death.

Immigrants and communities of color have long feared ICE’s brutality, and this administration has escalated the agency’s aggression and scaled its armed intimidation and unchecked violence in neighborhoods across the country. This is not safety and this is not freedom.

The senseless shooting deaths of these two beloved fathers are the tragic outcome of the administration’s ‘guns-everywhere’ approach and ‘shoot-first’ mentality, which have quietly penetrated institutions responsible for protecting our safety. But no agency is above the law, and no one should fear shootings and violence from their government.

Congress must stop the surge of ICE agents into our communities. We demand limits and accountability and an end to the unchecked use of firearms that continues to take lives.

Since the Trump administration began its highly armed crackdown on immigration, ICE agents have repeatedly perpetuated gun violence. According to The Trace, there have been 28 incidents in which immigration agents opened fire and nearly 50 incidents in which agents held bystanders or protesters at gunpoint, killing at least eight people and injuring another 14 people.

Brady: United Against Gun Violence is the nation's oldest gun organization working to free America from gun violence. We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
