Dan Gross, President of The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, comments on students shot in Kentucky and North Carolina Schools

Washington D.C., September 18, 2014 — “We are deeply troubled by today’s gun violence in schools in Kentucky and North Carolina. Schools are supposed to be safe havens where children can learn, grow and achieve. While the specifics of these events are under investigation, if they are like the overwhelming majority of school shootings – the guns involved came from a home. Over two-thirds (68%) of the attackers had acquired the gun(s) from their own home or that of a relative. If school shootings and other violent incidents at schools are to be stopped, the effort must begin at home. It starts with parents, who need to recognize the risks of guns in the home and make safer choices about gun access and storage. And, with other studies showing that in 81% of school shootings at least one other person had prior knowledge of the shooters’ plans, students can also play a role in preventing violence by reporting threats of violence to law enforcement, school officials or anonymous hotlines like 1-866-SPEAK-UP.

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
