WASHINGTON, D.C., April 25 , 2026 — Tonight, authorities confirmed there was an active shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton. Brady, the nation’s leading gun violence prevention organization, released the following statement.
Brady President Kris Brown said:
I am relieved to hear that everyone was safe following the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. While we still don’t know all the details, we do know that there is never an excuse for political violence, and Americans should not live in fear of being gunned down.
It is not lost on me that the shooting tonight occurred at the same hotel where White House Press Secretary Jim Brady was shot in the attempted assassination of President Reagan. Until recently, Reagan was the last president to be shot in an assassination attempt. Today, it seems like the U.S. has accepted more political violence than similar democracies. That is completely unconscionable.
While President Trump might think a new White House ballroom is a solution to prevent gun violence, the rest of us know that time and time again, there is one thing at the root of these horrific acts: our nation's easy access to firearms. We cannot stop at condemning political violence alone – we must change the laws, the industry, and the culture around guns in our country to prevent these incidents.

Brady: United Against Gun Violence is the nation's oldest gun organization working to free America from gun violence. We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
