Brady Urges Los Angeles Department of Justice to Open Investigation into Turner’s Outdoorsman

In a letter to District Attorney Hochman, Brady LA and Brady call for him to investigate store’s role in the gun violence epidemic in California

LOS ANGELES, June 5, 2026 — Yesterday, the Los Angeles chapter of Brady and the national organization of Brady, the nation's oldest gun violence prevention organization, sent a letter to Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman, urging him to investigate firearms retailer Turner’s Outdoorsman.

Turner's operates 34 stores across California, including over a dozen in the greater Los Angeles region. In 2024, more than one in five guns recovered from crimes statewide (22.48%) that were traced to a California dealer came from a Turner's, and the top eight California crime gun dealers that year were all Turner's stores. The letter also points out that Turner’s has been linked to thousands of firearms recovered in disproportionately Black and Brown communities since the California’s Department of Justice began collecting this data.

“In the past five years, the California Department of Justice inspected fewer than a third of Turner's locations — just 11 of 34 — and still found more than 1,400 violations,” Suzanne Verge, President of Brady’s Los Angeles Chapter, and Christian Heyne, Chief Programs and Policy Officer at Brady United Against Gun Violence, write. “Federal oversight has been even weaker. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which inspects gun dealers at the federal level, often conducts inspections less than once a decade. No other industry in this country operates under such permissive conditions. District Attorney Hochman must use his authority to investigate Turner’s Outdoorsman. Being tough on crime requires addressing all of the root causes of crime, including the gun industry itself.”

Brady and Brady LA finished their letter by reiterating their support for Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, who initiated calls to investigate Turner’s Outdoorsman, and called on the LA District Attorney to use its statutory authority to inspect gun dealers to hold the stores accountable for crime.

Brady: United Against Gun Violence is the nation's oldest gun organization working to free America from gun violence. We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
