Brady is proud to represent the City of Naperville in defense of its assault weapons ban, passed in response to the tragic July 4th parade shooting two years ago this week.
WASHINGTON, July 2, 2024 – Brady, the nation’s leading gun violence prevention organization, welcomes news that the Supreme Court will not review a Court of Appeals decision to preserve life-saving assault weapons bans in Illinois and Naperville. Brady is proud to represent the City of Naperville in defense of its assault weapons ban, which was passed in response to the tragic 2022 July 4th parade shooting in Highland Park, IL.
Brady President Kris Brown said:
“Today, the gun lobby lost and the people of Illinois won. We are pleased that the Supreme Court has recognized, as argued by Brady, that this case at this stage of litigation is not cert-worthy. This is particularly welcome news amid the two-year anniversary of the Highland Park July 4th mass shooting, in which a gunman armed with an assault weapon killed seven people and injured dozens more, showing the extreme lethality of these weapons of war.
The damage done by this gunman is irreversible. But we can put a stop to this deadly cycle of violence in America by sensibly banning assault weapons and large-capacity magazines, which have long been favored by America’s mass shooters. This week, millions of Americans will head to parades and barbecues to celebrate freedom — and they deserve to also be free from gun violence.
While this lawsuit continues to unfold, Naperville’s and the state of Illinois' bans on assault weapons will remain in place. We look forward to continuing to defend this life-saving law in the district court.”
Assault weapons, paired with large-capacity magazines, are often the weapon of choice for public mass shooters. In shootings where assault weapons or large-capacity magazines are used, 155% more people are shot, and 47% more people are killed than in shootings where these types of weapons are not used. In 2023, 18% of mass shootings in which four or more people were killed involved an assault weapon. Currently, 14 states and Washington, D.C. have banned large-capacity magazines.
