Brady Statement on White House Complex Shooting

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 23, 2026 — Today, reports indicate there were gunshots fired outside the White House complex, with U.S. Secret Service returning fire and at least two wounded. Reports indicate the shooter was taken down and a potentially uninvolved bystander was as well. The White House lockdown has been lifted. Notable past incidents of shots fired at the White House occurred in 1994 and 2011.

Kris Brown, President of Brady, said:

While details continue to emerge, we must acknowledge that the unceasing occurrence of gun violence – in streets around the country and even the nation’s capital – is unique to America among industrialized countries. As we await more information about the shooter and where they obtained their firearm, this is yet another reminder that preventing gun violence and political violence should be a universal goal for all our elected leaders. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who had to endure such a terrifying, all-too-common experience today, and I’m hopeful that any innocent bystander makes a full recovery.

Brady: United Against Gun Violence is the nation's oldest gun organization working to free America from gun violence. We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
