Brady Statement on Illinois' Assault Weapons Ban

Illinois is the 9th State to Enact an Assault Weapons Ban.

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 10, 2023 – Today, Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker signed into law the Protect Illinois Communities Act, which includes a ban on assault weapons and large capacity magazines, among other gun safety reforms. Illinois is now the ninth state to enact such a ban. Brady President Kris Brown released the following statement:

“Today, Illinois took a major step in better protecting families and communities, and ensuring that tragedies such as Highland Park never happen again.”

“After witnessing tragedy after tragedy, where innocent civilians are gunned down by weapons of war, the people and lawmakers decided enough was enough. This same passion and dedication is a model that should be replicated in all municipalities and states that have suffered gun violence.

“We have the power to prevent these uniquely American tragedies, and a ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines is a critical step towards that future. Our movement will continue until the sale of assault weapons is banned everywhere in the U.S.

“With this new law, the people of Illinois have shown why they are a leader of gun safety laws. Brady thanks Gov. Pritzker, Rep.
