Brady Statement on Mass Shooting at Oxford High School in Oakland, Michigan

Washington, D.C., November 30, 2021 - Following the mass shooting at Oxford High School in Oakland, Michigan, Brady calls for action to prevent mass shootings, school shootings, and gun violence in all of its forms.

Brady President Kris Brown shared:

“Students across the country returned to school yesterday after a short break where they celebrated Thanksgiving with loved ones, yet less than 48 hours later at least three people in the Oxford High School community have been killed in America’s latest school shooting. This kind of tragedy is unthinkable in any other country, yet there have been an estimated 650 mass shootings in our country this year alone. These tragedies demand action. They demand solutions.

Shamefully, we have the solutions, but a handful of elected officials have rigged our political systems to prevent the meaningful gun violence prevention reforms that an overwhelming majority of Americans want. The result of that inaction is the kind of events like we’ve seen today. We do not know all or many of the details around this shooting, but we will find out facts like where and how this minor obtained the firearm used. We cannot look away from this shooting and this community in the coming days, weeks, months or years. Survivors and those affected by this shooting will require care long after physical wounds have disappeared. We owe it to them to take action now and stop future tragedies such as this from occurring ever again.”

Brady: United Against Gun Violence is the nation's oldest gun organization working to free America from gun violence. We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
