WASHINGTON, D.C., May 18, 2026 — Today, authorities confirmed there was an active shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego in California. A security guard and two staff members from the Islamic school on the center’s grounds were murdered by gunshot wounds, and the two suspected teenaged shooters are dead from self-inflicted wounds. Authorities confirmed they are investigating the attack as a potential hate crime.
Last week, Brady President Kris Brown posted an opinion piece on disarming hate in the United States on her Substack, Locked and Unloaded.
Brady President Kris Brown said the following about today’s attack:
No community should live in fear for simply existing, learning, and worshipping together. My heart and thoughts tonight are with the families of the three victims of the horrific attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego. The city of San Diego has done significant work to decrease gun violence successfully, but these victims’ families should not be receiving the worst news of their lives today. It is never too late for our elected officials at every level of government to heed us when we say ‘enough is enough’ and fully disarm hate in this country.

Brady: United Against Gun Violence is the nation's oldest gun organization working to free America from gun violence. We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
