Brady Applauds Signage of Maryland State Gun Violence Prevention Bills

New Reforms Impact Open Carry, Permitting, Data Collection, and Safe Firearm Storage.

Washington, D.C., May 16, 2023 – Today, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed into law several bills intended to reduce gun violence. The bills include restrictions on where firearms can be openly carried, strengthened concealed carry permitting system, new protocols for tracing firearms, and safe storage requirements. Brady, the oldest national gun violence prevention organization, has endorsed and worked alongside state lawmakers, national and local partners, Brady grassroots volunteers and members of Team ENOUGH on this historic package.

Brady President Kris Brown stated:

"Putting an end to the gun violence epidemic requires action, and Maryland is leading on that front.
“This package of legislation will prevent Marylanders from living in a reality where guns are everywhere. It prohibits the concealed carrying of firearms in schools and health care facilities, so families can be sure that their children and loved ones will be safe from the threat of senseless gun violence, especially when they are most vulnerable.
“Provisions on tracing guns owned by individuals subject to protective orders and the strengthening of the permitting process will inhibit firearms from making their way into the wrong hands and will provide critical safeguards against deadly domestic violence.
“Additionally, Jaelynn's Law, named after Jaelynn Willey, who was shot and killed with an unsecured firearm when she was just 16, will help prevent future tragic instances of suicide by firearm and family fire that occur when guns are left unsecure in the home.”
“Brady applauds Gov. Moore for signing these bills into law, and thanks all bill sponsors and champions for helping to pass these life-saving measures.”
