Brady Center Responds To Shooting in California

Today's Attack Claims Five Lives, Injures Two Children as Judges Hear Sandy Hook Lawsuit Appeal

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 14, 2017 — This morning, as the Connecticut Supreme Court took up a lawsuit brought on behalf of victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting, a gunman opened fire near an elementary school in northern California. Preliminary information shows that the shooter killed four people and wounded many more at multiple different scenes. Early reports show that at least two children are among the injured.

"How many more mass shootings do we need to suffer before we enact sensible policies to stop gun violence?" said Avery Gardiner, Co-President of the Brady Campaign & Center to Prevent Gun Violence. "As a nation, we have had as many mass shootings as days in the calendar year. America is better than this."

"We know how to stop gun violence in America. But the gun lobby resists every attempt to pass sensible legislation. The solution to school shootings is not to arm teachers. The solution is to prevent dangerous people from having easy access to guns," added Kris Brown, Brady Co-President. "If it is indeed true that this shooter was a known felon, we call upon law enforcement to investigate and disclose how he was able to get his guns."

"As mothers, as gun violence prevention advocates, and as Americans, our hearts go out to all the victims and their families. It is time for all of us to demand action from our political leaders," added Ms. Gardiner and Ms. Brown.

Today's shooting in California occurred as the Connecticut Supreme Court heard arguments in a case against Remington, the manufacturer of the infamous AR-15 Bushmaster rifle. The families of those slain at Sandy Hook Elementary School seek to hold Remington accountable for one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history for negligently marketing and selling guns that were designed for military use.
