Brady Campaign Statement on Trenton Arts Festival Shooting

Washington, D.C., June 17, 2018 - Early this morning, yet another community was rocked by the news of a shooting that left 20 injured at an all-night arts festival in Trenton, NJ. While details are still coming in, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence issued a statement expressing outrage at yet another mass shooting in America.

Brady co-president Kris Brown stated:

“We have reached the point where a mass shooting of over 20 innocent people - including members of our law enforcement - is a news blip. No other nation would tolerate even one such incident without stepping up and protecting its people. This is unacceptable, and it’s long past time for our elected officials to stand and say ENOUGH.”

Brady co-president Avery Gardiner added:

“The ‘guns everywhere’ agenda pushed by the gun lobby doesn’t create a safer America - it creates a more violent nation where art festivals, schools, movie theatres, concerts, nightclubs, and almost every public venue are no longer safe. There’s no other public health epidemic that we would choose to simply ignore, but gun violence is absolutely an epidemic blighting our nation. These tragedies simply cannot continue.”

This past week, New Jersey governor Phil Murphy signed a package of gun safety bills into law, including an extreme risk protection order and expanded background checks, codifying all three points of the Brady three-point plan. As today shows, it will be imperative for the state to begin enforcing the new laws as soon as possible to protect its citizens.

Carole Stiller, President of the New Jersey Brady Campaign/Million Mom March Chapters, noted:

"For a shooting like this to happen in our own neighborhood is simply devastating. We are so thankful that our friends and family members who were at ART ALL NIGHT are safe, but we grieve for the injured. The Trenton community is strong, and we will continue our efforts to end gun violence here, across New Jersey, and all throughout the country - but this tragic event is proof that we simply must do more."

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
