Brady Responds to AG Blanche’s Introduction of Final Rule to Restore Gun Rights to Individuals Prohibited from Owning Firearms

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 17, 2026 — Today, Attorney General Todd Blanche introduced a new rule to the Office of the Federal Register outlining an update to the process for restoring federal firearm rights to individuals who had been deemed unfit to own or carry a firearm. Upon the introduction of the rule, Brady President Kris Brown shared the following remarks:

We are aware of the Final Rule and are reviewing it closely. Since the administration indicated last year that it would propose a new rule to restore gun rights, we have underscored that the restoration of gun rights must involve a robust and thoughtful system that minimizes the risk to public safety. Yet the Trump administration has consistently shown us they have no such discretion, including by restoring gun rights to convicted domestic abusers and violent January 6 insurrectionists, and by tirelessly rolling back broad policies proven to prevent crime and gun violence. In his first finalized firearms rule as Attorney General, we hope Todd Blanche has prioritized American lives over gun lobby profits.

Brady: United Against Gun Violence is the nation's oldest gun organization working to free America from gun violence. We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.
