Further weakening ATF and federal oversight of law-breaking gun stores and sellers will flood communities with illegal firearms, threatening more violence and crime
WASHINGTON, D.C., June 27, 2025 — According to recent Washington Post reporting, the Trump administration’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is working to slash upwards of 50 rules and gun restrictions under the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The cuts, which are anticipated by July 4, would reverse historic progress in reducing gun violence.

With guns the number one killer of kids, gutting our nation’s oversight and regulation of the gun industry is a reckless betrayal. It is a slap in the face that these cuts will coincide with the July 4 holiday. At a time when Americans should be celebrating freedom to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, this Administration is actively undermining our safety, instead prioritizing the financial interests of their allies in the gun industry. As DOGE hacks away at ATF and common-sense gun industry regulations, we will all become at greater risk of being shot and killed wherever we go — from parades and BBQs to schools, grocery stores, and our places of worship.
Make no mistake: this has nothing to do with protecting a Second Amendment right and everything to do with protecting and expanding gun industry profits. The small percentage of gun stores with the most egregious violations, including those tied to gun trafficking and violent crime, that cause disproportionate harm will get back into the business of selling guns to those who seek to do harm to themselves or others. Children, families, law enforcement, and gun owners won’t benefit; only the gun industry executives who pad their pockets from dangerous sales will be better off.
Trump wants us to think he’s ‘tough on crime,’ but his administration has been quietly restoring gun rights to criminal offenders, arming domestic abusers, undermining law enforcement, and letting irresponsible gun dealers off the hook from adhering to the law. The result will be more Americans shot and killed, and murder rates will soar - just as they did during President Trump’s first term.
