Brady Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Asking Saves Kids Campaign on ASK Day

Falling each year on June 21 marking the start of summer, the national awareness day teaches parents and guardians to ask: "Is there an unlocked gun where my child plays?"

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 21, 2025 — Today, Brady observes  the 25th anniversary of its Asking Saves Kids campaign on ASK Day, which takes place each year on June 21 to remind parents, guardians, and caretakers to ask one life-saving question: “Is there an unlocked gun in the home where my child will play?”

The Asking Saves Kids (ASK) campaign launched in2000 at the National Mall on Mother's Day during the Million Mom March. For more than two decades, Brady and ASK supporters have partnered with over 400 grassroots organizations to spread this vital message in neighborhoods and homes nationwide. The ASK campaign serves as a cornerstone of Brady's broader mission to end family fire.

Every day in America, children are lost to what we call "family fire" — shootings that result from someone misusing an unsecured firearm from the home. These are not inevitable tragedies. Keeping guns locked and unloaded reduces the risk of unintentional shooting deaths and gun suicides among youth by 73%.

Right now, 4.6 million children in America live in homes with unlocked guns. That's one in three homes with kids. With summer break bringing more playdates, visits to friends' houses, and sleepovers, the risks multiply. As children spend more time away from home, the likelihood of encountering unsecured firearms increases dramatically.

Parents naturally ask about food allergies, screen time, supervision, and other safety concerns before playdates. Brady is asking parents to add one more question to safety conversations they're already having. Simply asking "Is there an unlocked gun where my child plays?" to this list is a crucial step parents can take to protect children.

President of Brady Kris Brown said:

For twenty-five years, Brady has highlighted how ending family fire starts with the simple act of asking the right questions. ASK Day was born from the knowledge that one simple conversation can mean the difference between life and death for a child. Since our first ASK Day, we’ve witnessed over 19 million families embrace this life-saving campaign and protect their children — and today, that grassroots power matters more than ever.

As the Trump administration moves to roll back or eliminate critical gun safety protections, parents cannot wait for Washington to act. We must take responsibility into our own hands, and ASK Day empowers every parent with a simple but powerful tool to protect children when our leaders fail to do so. This ASK Day, let's commit to asking the question, sharing the message, and creating communities where children's safety and lives come first.
