Washington, D.C., July 1, 2022 - Today, Brady celebrates California Governor Gavin Newsom for signing the FY 2023 Budget and bills banning unserialized ghost guns in California and limiting the marketing of firearms to minors. The budget signed today includes $40 million for firearm relinquishment.

Brady President Kris Brown shared:

“These bills are common-sense and will help to keep Californians safe from gun violence. AB 1621 takes decisive action to finally curb the flow of ghost guns in California, by immediately barring the sale of unserialized and unregulated kits and parts. Ghost guns have wreaked havoc in communities all over the state and in particular have disproportionately affected the state’s Black and Brown residents. We thank Assemblymember Gipson for his continued and relentless leadership on this issue.

Similarly, AB 2571 will help to keep firearms out of the hands of minors and limit the dangerous and damaging violent marketing that gun manufacturers use to push their products, despite clear and repeated evidence that such ads pose a threat to public safety. Brady applauds Gov. Newsom for quickly signing these bills and for continuing to champion this important issue.”

About the Bills Signed Today:

AB 1621 - Authored by Assemblymember Gipson, this bill builds on President Biden’s recently finalized federal rule and keeps Californians safe by ensuring that parts and kits used to build ghost guns cannot be sold in California until, and only if, they are regulated as firearms under federal law. It will also allow people in possession of ghost guns to get them serialized, to ensure that all firearms in CA can be properly traced.

AB 2571 - Authored by Assemblymember Bauer-Kahan, this bill prohibits the dangerous marketing of firearms to minors.
