Brady Has Long Advocated for Such an Office as Gun Violence Becomes Number One Killer of American Children.

Washington, D.C., September 21, 2023 – Following media reports, the White House today officially announced the creation of an Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Brady, the oldest national gun violence prevention organization, has long advocated for such an office and released the following statement:

Kris Brown, president of Brady, said:

“Gun violence directly impacts 1 in 5 Americans, and that is only worsening, which is why now is the time for greater action.
“We are so pleased that the Biden administration has officially created an Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which will allow a focused and coordinated response to gun violence, which plagues states and communities all over the country. Just as FEMA responds to hurricanes and earthquakes, we have desperately needed a federal agency dedicated to responding to this growing public health crisis.
“Brady long advocated and fought for an Office of Gun Violence Prevention even before President Biden took office. Tackling this epidemic will take a whole-of-government approach, and this new office will ensure the executive branch is focused and coordinated on proven solutions that will save lives.
“President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have made their personal commitment to ending gun violence clear since day one, and this new office demonstrates they prioritize building an America free from gun violence. Additionally, we look forward to continuing to work with movement leaders Greg Jackson and Rob Wilcox to tackle gun violence in all forms.
“It’s important to remember, however, that executive action alone isn't enough to end gun violence, which is why Congress must still act to pass common-sense gun laws, including universal background checks and an assault weapons ban."

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
