Brady Applauds Signing of Three Common-Sense Gun Violence Prevention Laws in Washington State

Washington, D.C., March 23, 2022 - Today, Brady applauds Washington Governor Jay Inslee for signing three common-sense gun violence prevention bills into law. These bills, SB 5078, HB 1705, and HB 1630, will ban large capacity magazines, the sale and possession of unserialized and untraceable ghost guns, and carrying firearms at school board meetings and civic functions such as polling places, respectively. These bills are common-sense. They are prudent. And, Brady thanks the sponsors of these bills and Gov. Inslee for ensuring they become law.

“Today, Washington is a safer state for all of its residents. The laws signed by Governor Inslee are common-sense and they will help stop gun violence and harmful intimidation with firearms. By banning large capacity magazines, the state will stop the sale and use of weapons of war that have been used in mass shootings across the country; while by banning the sale and possession of ghost guns and the parts used to build them, the state will stop the proliferation of this growing and existential threat. Brady is grateful to the sponsors of these bills, to the Alliance for Gun Responsibility for their leadership, and to the numerous grassroots activists across the state who have worked to ensure that they become law.”

About These New Laws:

SB 5078 - Bans the sale and ownership of large capacity magazines of more than 10 rounds, with an exception for those magazines already possessed by Washington residents.

HB 1705 - Bans the sale and possession of unfinished and unserialized frames and receivers used to assemble untraceable ghost guns, with common-sense carve outs for specific exceptions such as antique firearms.

HB 1630 - Bans firearms from polling locations and other civic functions such as school board meetings occurring at city, town, county, or other municipal buildings such as schools.
