Brady Campaign Hails NJ Governor Phil Murphy For Signing Strong Package of Gun Safety Laws

Washington, D.C., June 13, 2018 - Today, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed into law six bills that give his state some of the strongest gun safety protections in the nation. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, which endorsed Gov. Murphy during his 2017 election campaign, praised the governor and New Jersey lawmakers for taking such a decisive step to protect their constituents from gun violence.

Brady Campaign Board Chairman Kevin Quinn, who attended the bill signing in person, stated:

“Words matter, but actions mean more. With today’s signing, Gov. Murphy has followed through on his pledge to directly take on the crisis of gun violence in New Jersey. This is a direct result of New Jersey voters prioritizing gun safety last November when they voted for Gov. Murphy and rejected the legacy of a governor who consistently stood with the gun lobby. Voters across the country will see today’s action and know that if they support gun safety champions this November, they too will see real change in their own communities.”

Gov. Murphy signed six bills into law today, including:

• A1217/S2259, enacting extreme risk protection orders in New Jersey;
• A2757/S2374, requiring background checks at the point of sale for private gun purchases;
• A2761/S102, reducing the maximum capacity of ammunition magazines from 15 to 10 rounds;
• A3129/S2465, prohibiting “ghost guns,” or the manufacturing of guns without serial numbers;
• A2759/S2245, adopting the federal definition of armor piercing ammunition; and
• A2758/S2376, strengthening the requirements for concealed carry of a weapon.

Since Parkland, the Brady Campaign has advocated for a three-point policy plan to reduce gun violence, including expanded background checks and extreme risk laws. Combined with New Jersey’s already-existing assault weapon ban, the state has now enacted all parts of the three-point plan.
