Brady Applauds New Zealand Leaders for Taking Action, Not Sides

PRIME MINISTER JACINDA ARDERN ANNOUNCES BAN ON ASSAULT WEAPONS FOLLOWING LAST WEEK’S MASS SHOOTING

Washington, D.C., March 21, 2019 — Just days after 50 people were shot and killed at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, Brady applauded Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the country’s leaders for taking decisive action to protect their citizens. The announcement that military-style semi-automatic weapons, assault rifles, and high capacity magazines will be banned in New Zealand comes less than a week after the worst mass shooting the country has ever seen. Brady further called on American elected officials to follow New Zealand’s example and pass gun safety legislation shown to be widely popular with their constituents, including S. 66 the Assault Weapons Ban of 2019.

Brady president Kris Brown stated,

“This is a shining example of what can happen when our leaders take action, not sides. Prime Minister Ardern and her cabinet wasted no time in ensuring that the tragedy in Christchurch will not be repeated in their country, and they are providing a light for the world to follow. Now, it’s time for our own leaders at home to do the same. We have an opportunity to pass common-sense legislation that will expand background checks, enact extreme risk laws, and ban assault weapons at home. We must do so immediately. We must make sure that no community feels the pain that Christchurch, Parkland, Las Vegas, Orlando, Sutherland Springs, Sandy Hook, and so many others have been through. We too must take action, not sides.”

Brady: United Against Gun Violence is the nation's oldest gun organization working to free America from gun violence. We believe that changing laws alone won’t end our nation's gun violence crisis; we must also change hearts and minds. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach to end this epidemic: change the laws, change the gun industry, and change the conversation about guns in America.

Tell Congress: Stop the Deadly School Shootings!

Just days ago, a 16-year-old shooter killed three young children and a dedicated teacher with his mother's shotgun. No parent should ever have to wonder if their child will come home from school.
