WASHINGTON, D.C., September 25, 2024 — Brady, the nation’s leading gun violence prevention group, applauds Governor Newsom and the California State Legislature for signing a suite of gun safety legislation into law. Brady is incredibly proud to have sponsored and successfully advocated for a trio of new laws – signed today along with over a dozen additional Brady-endorsed bills – that mandate safe storage of firearms at home, strengthen state oversight of gun dealers, and require the complete destruction of seized or surrendered firearms.
Of particular note, this package now means California has the strongest safe storage requirements in the country. As firearms continue to be the leading cause of death for children and teens, advocating for safe storage remains a core pillar of Brady's work. Data shows us 75% of youth firearm suicides for which the gun storage method could be identified, the gun was stored loaded and unlocked and 76% of school shooters under the age of 18 accessed the gun from the home of family or friends. Tragedies like these could be prevented by limiting firearm access through safe storage.
Vice President of Organizing, Shikha Hamilton, said:
“With the successful passage of this legislation, California has once again affirmed its position as a national leader on gun safety. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible work of countless state policymakers and advocates, including Brady’s grassroots network which mobilized thousands of voices in support of these bills and demonstrated the strength of collective action. We hope the results we’ve achieved in California signal to the rest of the country that your voice is powerful, and when we work together action is possible.”
Brady CA President and San Francisco Chapter Leader, Mattie Scott, said:
“This suite of legislative action is an important step forward in moving the needle on firearm accountability. From ensuring transparency on oversight of gun dealers to requiring gun owners to safely store their firearms in the home, these laws will work to protect Californians from the devastating impacts of gun violence. We applaud the decisive actions taken by Governor Newsom, state lawmakers, and our incredible advocates to turn these bills into laws that will save lives.”
Co-Chair of the Oakland/Alameda Chapter of Brady, Griffin Dix, said:
“Today, California has successfully raised the bar for safe storage requirements. My 15-year old son, Kenzo, was shot while at a friend's house with a loaded, unsecured gun — and this bill will go a long way towards preventing other families from experiencing this tragedy. It’s critical that lawmakers across the country follow California’s lead by implementing and strengthening life-saving safe storage requirements.”
