POLICY REFORM The overwhelming majority of Americans support stronger gun laws. We fight to pass sensible laws and policies that are proven to keep Americans safe from gun violence. We are committed to upholding common-sense gun laws, making it hard for irresponsible people to get a firearm, and keeping firearms away from those who are less willing to use a firearm responsibly— without infringing on Second Amendment rights. Impact point: We work at the state, local, and federal levels to pass laws and policies proven to prevent gun violence. And our work is saving lives. Today, 64% of Americans live in states with safe firearm storage laws, compared to only 46% a decade ago.
INDUSTRY OVERSIGHT Americans held Big Tobacco accountable. It’s past time we did the same for the gun industry, which contributes to and profits off of America’s gun violence crisis. Our Combating Crime Guns program works to shut down or reform negligent gun dealers who flood our streets with illegal and trafficked guns. Our renowned legal team takes the gun industry to court, winning landmark cases that protect us from gun violence. Impact point: We’ve won $70 million in verdicts and settlements on behalf of victims of gun violence, many ushering in major reforms for the gun industry.
CULTURE CHANGE As the gun violence crisis worsens in our country, we know that changing laws and policies isn’t the only solution — we must change our social norms and culture, too. Just as Americans shifted norms and behaviors to curb youth smoking and wear seatbelts, we can shift our norms and behaviors about how we use, own, and perceive firearms.Impact point: After seeing our End Family Fire public education campaign, gun owners are over 5x more likely to seek information about safe storage, and nearly half begin storing their weapons more safely.
