Trump’s Executive Order to “Dismantle Gun Control”
On the campaign trail, President Trump vowed to roll back every single measure the Biden administration took to prevent gun violence as soon as he took office. Sure enough, President Trump issued his first executive order on guns within his first month in the Oval Office. In his own words, he is seeking to “dismantle gun control.” The order mandates a “review” of Biden-era policies to prevent gun violence, alleging that these sensible solutions “attack” law-abiding gun owners and “infringe” on Americans’ Second Amendment rights.
The truth of the matter is that these policies are both effective and constitutional. In fact, they are saving lives even today. Whereas gun homicides skyrocketed under the first Trump administration, the Biden administration’s gun safety policies helped usher in the largest decline in homicides in modern history. And despite President Trump’s unfounded claims about infringements on the Second Amendment, polls consistently show that even the majority of Republicans and gun owners want stronger policies to prevent gun violence. Americans of all walks of life are fed up with fearing being gunned down at churches, malls, and movie theaters. But if President Trump rolls back measures to prevent gun violence, all of us will be at greater risk of being shot.
What’s At Stake and What Will Happen If Trump Guts Gun Violence Prevention Policies?
President Trump’s executive order could reopen the untraceable ghost gun market and undermine actions to protect Americans from gun trafficking and violent crime.

Before the Biden administration took action to regulate DIY ghost guns, anyone — including domestic abusers, gun traffickers, and children — could go online or to a gun show, buy a kit without a background check, and quickly make their own untraceable firearm at home, including AR-15-style rifles. This made ghost guns the go-to choice for crime. But their use in crime dramatically dropped after President Biden’s executive order to regulate and to require background checks to buy them.
If President Trump rolls back these ghost gun regulations, the results will be deadly: more untraceable weapons used in homicides, school shootings, mass shootings, and domestic violence, and more crimes and murders going unsolved. Ghost guns will once again quickly become a weapon of choice for criminal activity, and we will all be less safe in our schools, homes, workplaces, and neighborhoods.
Gun traffickers and lawbreaking gun dealers will be let off the hook, staying in business while fueling gun violence
After decades of free passes for breaking the law, the Biden administration finally held rogue gun dealers accountable for irresponsible and unlawful business practices, ensuring that gun stores follow federal firearms laws and don't sell guns illegally - or risk being shut down. Every other industry faces oversight – from food, to cars, to airplanes. Enforcing the law means safer communities. It's that simple. But if President Trump rolls back consequences for negligent gun sellers, crime will soar — just like it did under the first Trump administration when murder peaked. Lawbreaking gun dealers will freely be able to traffick firearms, skip background checks, sell off the books, and fuel gun violence.
