Multiple people have reportedly been hospitalized in what is at least the 27th school shooting of 2025.
WASHINGTON, April 17, 2025 – Brady, the nation’s oldest gun violence prevention organization, responded today to a shooting at Florida State University in which multiple people have reportedly been hospitalized. According to polling by Brady, about 80 percent of parents fear their child’s school will be the site of a mass shooting.
This shooting comes as Florida lawmakers are considering a bill that would lower the minimum age to purchase assault weapons, reversing a law that was enacted in response to the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. It also comes just two days after five students were injured during a shooting at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas, TX.
Brady President Kris Brown said:
This is at least the 27th school shooting this year, and my heart breaks for our country. Yesterday we marked 18 years since the shooting at Virginia Tech, my alma mater, and in just three days we will recognize 26 years since the shooting at Columbine. Since Columbine, there have been over 420 school shootings across the United States.
It is not just the people who were shot and injured today who will forever carry this pain; mass shootings inflict lasting trauma on entire communities. We can change course. Yet the Trump administration is quietly rolling back our nation’s gun violence prevention policies. And with guns the number one killer of kids in America, our children will pay the price.
Until we change our nation’s laws, reform the gun industry, and change hearts and minds, our country will continue to face this uniquely American gun violence epidemic. Our thoughts are with the FSU community and all those impacted by this senseless shooting.
Gun Violence Survivor and Senior Advisor to Brady Fred Guttenberg said:
America is broken. My daughter Jaime [Guttenberg] was murdered in the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, FL. Many of her friends who were lucky enough to survive that shooting went on to attend FSU. Today, those students experienced their second school shooting and some of them were even in the student union where the active shooter call was made. As a father, all I ever wanted after my daughter was shot and killed was to help children be safe. Sadly, because of the many people in power who refuse to do the right things to reduce gun violence, I am not surprised by what happened today.

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
