Washington, D.C., February 13, 2023 – According to media reports, on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, there is an ongoing active shooter situation at Michigan State University.
Kris Brown, president of Brady, released the following statement:
"Just as we’re recognizing the fifth anniversary of the deadliest high school shooting in history, we are experiencing yet another school shooting. It remains wholly devastating to live in the only country in the industrial world where we regularly wake up to this horrific news.“It is even more egregious that an entire generation must live under the constant fear of being shot, whether at school, at places of worship, in a concert, at a playground, or any number of youthful rites of passage, because too many policymakers refuse to take meaningful action to prevent it. Our deepest sympathies are with the families and individuals impacted by yet another senseless tragedy."
Robert Schentrup, Team ENOUGH founding member and gun violence survivor whose sister Carmen was killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting, added:
"I know what it's like to hear the horrifying news that there’s been a shooting. What it’s like to wonder if my loved one is safe. And I know the devastation of finding out that no, they are not. My sister Carmen was one of the 17 people killed in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. And at a time when I should be with family, sharing memories of my sister - I’m instead viscerally reminded that no one is safe from gun violence. My thoughts are with the Michigan State University community, but let’s be clear — it doesn’t have to be this way. Gun violence is preventable and we have the solutions. But we need our lawmakers to take action to stop this American nightmare."
