Brady Marks the Opening of the Maryland Legislative Session

Washington, D.C., January 14, 2021 - Following the opening of the Maryland General Assembly’s 2021 legislative session, Brady calls on lawmakers to immediately prioritize life-saving gun violence prevention policies, just as they did in 2020, to help keep Marylanders safe from gun violence.

Brady President Kris Brown shared:

“Following a year marked by gun violence, including more women killed in Baltimore than ever before, Brady calls on the Maryland General Assembly and Governor Larry Hogan to take substantive action to prevent gun violence across the state. Last year, the General Assembly passed SB 708, a bill to dedicate funding for the Maryland Violence Intervention and Prevention Program (VIPP) which would support evidence-based programs to prevent gun violence through community-based and hospital-based interventions and which Brady supported. Though Gov. Hogan vetoed this bill, the General Assembly can and should override that veto at once. The events of last year have shown how short-sighted and ill-conceived Gov. Hogan’s action was. The legislature can correct his mistake and begin implementing solutions that will keep Marylanders safe.

Maryland has long led on public health policies to help keep residents safe from the scourge of gun violence. Brady looks forward to working with lawmakers to ensure that the state’s gun violence prevention laws remain among the most innovative and comprehensive in the country.”
