Brady Applauds Introduction of Background Checks, Extreme Risk Laws, and Safe Storage Bills in Michigan Senate

Proposed legislation on background checks, extreme risk laws, and safe storage follows recent shooting at Michigan State University

Washington, D.C., February 16, 2023 – Following the recent mass shooting at Michigan State University, lawmakers in the Michigan State Senate today introduced three gun safety bills that, if enacted, will address gun violence in all of its forms, by helping keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have them, preventing tragedies before they happen, and promoting responsible gun ownership.

The Brady-endorsed bills answer Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s call for stronger gun laws at her State of the State address last month and cover three critical policy areas in preventing gun violence: Background Checks (429), Extreme Risk Laws (421), and Safe Storage (419).

Brady President Kris Brown stated:

"Even before tragedy struck, Michigan leaders were working to meaningfully address gun violence prevent tragedies like the one students at Michigan State University experienced this week. This effort marks a strong stance against gun violence, and we applaud Gov. Whitmer, Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks, and State Sens. Rosemary Bayer, Curtis Hertel Jr. and all other bill sponsors for their leadership and for taking bold, sensible action to protect their communities. These evidence-based policy solutions are proven to save lives and will prevent senseless violence like the shootings at Oxford High School and Michigan State University.
“These measures are popular: 90% of Michigan voters support background checks for gun purchases, while 74% support extreme risk laws. After many mass shootings, policymakers often say ‘never again,’ and this legislation demonstrates that the Michigan Legislature is committed to ending gun violence in the state. We stand ready to work with them to ensure these bills become law and keep Michigan communities safe."
