Washington, D.C., July 6, 2021 - Today, Brady celebrates New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s signing of the historic bill to allow manufacturers, distributors, and dealers to be held responsible when they choose to profit off of the criminal gun market and irresponsibly contribute to gun violence. Gov. Cuomo signed this bill, which is the first of its kind in the nation and classifies negligent or illegal gun sales or marketing practices as a public nuisance, at a ceremony calling attention to the surge in gun violence across the state and where the governor declared a statewide “disaster emergency” to address this crisis. Brady thanks sponsors Senator Zellnor Myrie and Assemblymember Patricia Fahy for introducing, championing, and shepherding this legislation which will create a powerful incentive for gun industry actors to reform irresponsible practices and prevent gun violence.

Brady President Kris Brown shared:

“Today, Gov. Cuomo rightly called attention to the continuing gun violence epidemic plaguing New York and the nation by signing this historic bill, declaring a statewide disaster emergency and committing to break cycles of violence by robust investment in wrap-around services to communities most impacted. The bill signed into law today is the first of its kind in the nation and will address the negative ramifications of the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, ensuring that individuals affected by gun violence are able to hold gun industry actors who are responsible for fueling gun violence accountable for their actions. With this new law and laying out a comprehensive public health approach addressing increased violence New York has witnessed during the Covid-19 pandemic, New York is helping to build an effective model for other states to follow to prevent gun violence.

Brady thanks Gov. Cuomo for his leadership and thanks the sponsors of this bill, Senator Zellnor Myrie and Assemblymember Patricia Fahy, for introducing and shepherding this legislation so that it becomes law.”
