FOLLOWING RULING IN TEXAS LEGAL CHALLENGE, LEADING GUN SAFETY GROUPS URGE STATE DEPARTMENT TO ACT TO PREVENT COMPANY FROM RELEASING DESIGNS FOR DOWNLOADABLE, UNTRACEABLE GUNS

WASHINGTON D.C., July 27, 2018 – The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Everytown for Gun Safety and Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence today released the following response after a federal judge in Texas dismissed on procedural grounds the groups’ request for a temporary restraining order blocking Defense Distributed, Inc. — a company run by a self-proclaimed anarchist who wants to undermine gun safety laws — from posting online blueprints for downloadable, untraceable guns.

STATEMENT FROM NICK SUPLINA, MANAGING DIRECTOR FOR LAW AND POLICY AT EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:

“Publishing designs for downloadable, untraceable guns would undermine American gun laws, put the public at risk and make it harder for law enforcement agencies to solve crimes. After today’s ruling, it’s even more critical that the State Department act immediately to keep these deadly designs from getting into the hands of felons, terrorists and domestic abusers.”

STATEMENT FROM AVERY GARDINER, CO-PRESIDENT OF THE BRADY CAMPAIGN TO PREVENT GUN VIOLENCE:

“While today’s decision is bitterly disappointing, this fight has only just begun. We will do everything in our power to make sure that untraceable downloadable guns remain nothing more than an idea. To those who want to see this dangerous concept become reality, all we have to say is this - not on our watch.”

STATEMENT FROM ADAM SKAGGS, CHIEF COUNSEL OF GIFFORDS LAW CENTER TO PREVENT GUN VIOLENCE:

"While we are disappointed in this ruling against public safety, we are committed to continuing the fight. This is not an argument about free speech. This comes down to whether we want people who would never pass a background check to be able to download lethal, 3Dprinted guns with the click of a mouse. This fight goes on and our work continues. We will not rest, and we will not accept this threat to our streets, schools, and communities. We stand together and will pursue every avenue to stop this danger in its tracks."
