Brady Applauds Florida Rep. Christine Hunschofsky and Sen. Tina Polsky for Introducing A Bill Banning Ghost Guns in Florida

Washington, D.C., November 8, 2021 - Today, Brady celebrates Rep. Christine Hunschofsky and Sen. Tina Polsky for introducing SB 872 and HB 527, bills that will ban ghost guns in Florida. These bills, the first bill that Rep. Hunschofsky has introduced and a marker of her strong commitment to gun violence prevention, would prohibit the sale of unfinished frames and receivers, often sold in kits, without a background check that can be easily manufactured at home into fully functioning, untraceable guns. They will stop the proliferation of these weapons, which have become go-to options for individuals seeking to circumvent common-sense gun laws such as background checks.

Brady President Kris Brown shared:

“Ghost guns are real guns and the bills introduced today by Rep. Hunschofsky and Sen. Polsky will ensure that the law recognizes that truth. These unregulated and untraceable, fully-functioning firearms are a menace to society. No person should be allowed to buy a kit that they can easily turn into a working gun without a background check. Brady is proud to support these bills and grateful to Rep. Hunschofsky and Sen. Polsky for introducing them and championing common-sense gun violence prevention.”

Aalayah Eastmond
, Team ENOUGH Executive Council Member and survivor of the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, shared:

“Ghost guns continue to proliferate in communities within this nation, threatening to inflame our already raging gun violence crisis. For Black and Brown people, who are already disproportionately impacted by gun violence, these unregulated and untraceable firearms are worsening the violence in our communities. We have seen ghost guns used in instances of community violence, interpersonal violence, school shootings, and domestic violence. Americans and Floridians overwhelmingly agree that to own a gun you must pass a background check. I look forward to the Florida legislature acknowledging that basic and common-sense truth while banning the sale of these easily assembled and untraceable weapons.”

Fred Guttenberg
, whose daughter, Jaime, was killed in the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, shared:

“These bills will help stop the spread of ghost guns across Florida, the kind of action and common-sense solution that we desperately need to stop our national gun violence crisis. We need elected officials to follow the example of Rep. Hunschofsky and Sen. Polsky and prioritize stopping gun violence. I am proud to continue in this fight alongside them.”

About Ghost Guns

Ghost guns are unserialized and untraceable firearms that are often made from "ghost gun kits," that can be bought online, at gun shows or at gun stores and assembled at home. "Ghost gun kits," include all of the parts and often the equipment necessary to build these weapons at home. These kits are widely available and can be purchased by anyone, including prohibited purchasers, domestic abusers, and gun traffickers — without a background check. As these kits and guns are sold at gun shows and online every day throughout the country, they undermine all of the life-saving policies that state legislatures have fought so hard to put in place.

Several states including New York, Hawaii, New Jersey, and Nevada, as well as major cities such as, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., San Francisco and San Diego have already instituted bans on ghost guns or parts and kits used to assemble these weapons, and several other states including California, Rhode Island, and Connecticut have also passed laws regulating ghost guns.
