Washington, D.C., November 20, 2022 – A gunman opened fire and killed five people and injured 18 others at a Club Q, an LGBTQ+ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colo. last night, on the eve of Transgender Remembrance Day. The shooting is the 13th mass shooting event in Colorado this year.
The shooting comes six years after the Pulse nightclub shooting and at a time where hate crimes towards LGBTQ+ Americans are rising. In particular, hate crimes against transgender and non-gender-conforming people nearly doubled (93%) since 2017. Brady has endorsed The Disarm Hate Act, which would close the current gap in federal law and prevent people who have been convicted of a hate crime from purchasing or possessing a firearm.
The weapon used in the attack has been reported as a “long gun.” Colorado bans the possession and sale of large-capacity magazines that accept more than 15 rounds, however this law is currently being challenged in court. Additionally, neither the state nor Colorado Springs has an assault weapons ban. Similar bans in other localities in the state are being challenged in court. Brady has been involved in several legal defenses around assault weapon bans and large-capacity magazine bans across the country.

Gun violence laws across this country can work if they are strengthened and safety is a paramount objective. There is no place in our country for hate-filled individuals to target others based on prejudice, bigotry and racism. Our deepest sympathies are with all the families and individuals affected by senseless attack on the LGBTQ+ community.”
