Washington, D.C., December 23, 2020 - Brady and Brady California congratulate California Secretary of State Alex Padilla on his selection to represent California in the U.S. Senate during the 117th Congress. California Governor Gavin Newsom has made a prudent and historic choice in this selection. Brady looks forward to working with Secretary Padilla in Washington to help keep Californians and all Americans safe from gun violence.

Brady President Kris Brown shared:

“Alex Padilla will be a strong champion for gun violence prevention in the U.S. Senate. This is a historic and prudent designation. Brady thanks Gov. Newsom for recognizing the importance of selecting bold leaders to fill this seat, like its current occupant Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Sec. Padilla is without a doubt another such leader. California has consistently led the nation in enacting common-sense and evidence-based gun violence prevention laws, and Sec. Padilla has been a part of that progress throughout his career. Brady looks forward to working with Sec. Padilla in the U.S. Senate to bring that same purpose and leadership to Washington.

Brady California President Mattie Scott shared:

“As California’s Secretary of State, Alex Padilla has worked to protect California voters and elections, upholding the highest ideals of our democracy. Before that, Sec. Padilla was a strong and principled voice for the people in the California State Senate where he helped pass needed and common-sense gun safety laws. Sec. Padilla will bring this trove of experience with him to Washington, where his voice is sorely needed. Brady California is proud that Sec. Alex Padilla will represent us in the U.S. Senate and looks forward to working with him to pass gun safety laws such as those in California that will keep our entire country safe.”

Brady California Legislative Chair Amanda Wilcox shared:

“Gun violence is a national emergency and one that California has worked to address with evidence-based and robust policies for decades. Sec. Padilla has supported and aided those efforts throughout his career and will bring that experience and his seasoned voice to the United States Senate. We look forward to Sec. Padilla bringing California leadership to Washington to create real change for our country, in the same tradition of Vice President-elect Harris and former Senator Barbara Boxer before him.”

Brady has one powerful mission — to unite all Americans against gun violence. We work across Congress, the courts, and our communities with over 90 grassroots chapters, bringing together young and old, red and blue, and every shade of color to find common ground in common sense. In the spirit of our namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady, we have fought for over 45 years to take action, not sides, and we will not stop until this epidemic ends. It’s in our hands.
